Cincinnati, the Queen City, during the 19th century, was recognized as the Art Center of the West. Its apex period, with respect to both the number and eminence of artists and sculptors in residence, was reached between 1890 and 1900.

The Cincinnati Art Museum was inaugurated in 1886 and the Cincinnati Art Academy was established in 1888 in a flux of activity to create Institutions of culture. And the formation of an art club was a somewhat predestined eventuality given the artistic climate at that time.

A group of thirteen artists met in the studio of Clarence A. Bartlett on March 15, 1890 and organized the art club which soon adopted the name, Cincinnati Art Club. The Cincinnati Art Club was formed for the purpose of advancing the knowledge and love of art through education. This mission has been and will continue to be promoted through exhibitions, lectures, hands-on demonstrations, sketch and painting group work sessions, monthly critique sessions, maintenance of an art library and awarding of student scholarships.

The second oldest continually operating organization of its kind west of the Allegheny Mountains, the Cincinnati Art Club is proud of over 125 years of service to the community. The history of the Cincinnati Art Club is indeed interesting and remarkable. Today, it is America's second oldest continuously operating art club with a notable roster of nationally recognized artists: Henry Mosler, Thomas Corwin Lindsey, John Rettig, Frank Duveneck, Henry Farny, Joseph Sharp, John Hauser, Paul Ashbrook, Louis Charles Vogt, Charles T. Webber, Thomas Satterwhite Noble, Edward Volkert, Robert Blum, John Twachtman, Charles Kaelin, Edward Potthast, Charles Meurer, Herman Wessel, John E. Weis, Frank Myers, Lumen Winter and John Ruthven.

CAC Historian David Klocke will present this fascinating look into the history and influence of this art club and the importance of the art scene in Cincinnati throughout the last 128 years. Our sincere thanks to the Cincinnati Art Club for so generously hosting our workshops and paintout in conjunction with our own exhibition!
